About Dambulla Caves
Dambulla Cave Temple is located in the Matale district of central province Sri Lanka. It is an ancient Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka which is 600m high from the plains.
This is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. There are more than 80 documented caves around here. Among these, the main attractions are 5 caves containing statues and paintings.
This five separate caves contain over 150 magnificent Buddha statues and paintings, which are some of the most significant and creative religious art in Sri Lanka. The murals are spread over an area of 2100 square meters.
These caves are found after climbing about 350 feet in the Dambulla rock. Some of these caves have been designed by humans, and there are also natural caves. They consist of natural caves and man-made caves which are difficult to distinguish. Buddha images were first created here over 2000 years ago.
Due to these historical reasons, the city of Dambulla is a strong tourist attraction.
