About Galle

Galle is a city located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. This is also the capital of the southern province of Sri Lanka. Galle is famous all over the world because of the Galle Fort which was built by the Portuguese colonists in the 16th century (During the colonial period in Sri Lanka). Galle has also been designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Galle has been known as a trading city since ancient times. Galle Port is known as a unique port due to its location in the Indian Ocean. This is also a one of best tourists attracions in Sri Lanka.

Attractions in Galle

Galle Fort
In 1505, Old Ceylon was invaded and a fort was built by the Portuguese to protect them from enemy harassment. The fort was later expanded by the Dutch by building a large wall of stones around the sea. The fort also has architectural streets that reflect the Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Notable buildings here include a church restored by the Dutch in the 18th century.

The LightHouse
A lighthouse tower built on the south-east side of the old Galle fort, close to the beach.

Old Clock Tower
The clock tower on the Stone wall of Galle Fort is one of the oldest clock towers built in the country.

Jungle Beach
Galle is also known for its Jungle beach. It has a very beautiful beach with very rare types of plants. You can easily see coral reefs and various aquatic life by swimming or snorkeling in the sea in this area. So, this is a place you must go to experience the charm.

Unawatuna Beach
Another beautiful beach that attracts the attention of tourists coming to Galle.

Moonstone Mine, Meetiyagoda
It is a famous moonstones mine in Sri Lanka due to the ease with which tourists can see it. These Moonstones found in Sri Lanka have gained worldwide fame. Because these moonstones are extremely rare and have a milky-white color with a bluish tint. Visitors here can easily see how these beautiful stones are quarried and classified.

Talpe Beach
A beach with several natural pools. It is relatively clean and calm beach. According to the villagers, about 50 years ago, stone pools were cut from the coral reefs and coconut coir was soaked and used to separate the coir. Nowadays this place has become a tourist attraction.
