Sigiriya

About Sigiriya

Sigiriya is one of the most valuable monuments in Sri Lanka. This ancient palace and fort complex, which attracts thousands of tourists every year, is considered by the locals as the eighth wonder of the world. There is nothing wrong with calling it the most visited tourist destination in Sri Lanka.

The palace is located on a huge rocky plateau 370 meters above from sea level between Dambulla and Habarana. Sigiriya rock is 200 meters higher than the surrounding forests.  Its vision amazes viewers with the unique harmony between nature and the human imagination in the way they construct it.
The fort complex includes the ruins of an ancient royal palace. It is surrounded by large forts, large parks, ponds, canals, lanes and fountains.

Since the 3rd century BC, Sigiriya has been worshiped as a monastery. In the second half of the 5th century, King Kashyapa decided to build a palace here. (There are various theories about the Sigiriya built by King Kashyapa. Sources say that Kashyapa, who assassinated his father King Dhatusena and ascended the throne, built a fort on the Sigiriya rock to protect from his brother Mugalan).
After his death, it was converted back into a Buddhist monastery until it was abandoned in the 14th century.

The main entrance to the palace is on the north side of the rock.

Sigiriya is shaped like a giant stone lion. His feet are still intact but his upper body is ruined. The word “Sigiriya” originates from the word Sinhagiri which means the Lion Rock.

The western wall of Sigiriya was almost completely covered with murals, which were created during the reign of King Kashyapa. Today we can see only 18 murals.

The most notable feature of Sigiriya is its mirror wall. In the old days it was very well polished. The mirror wall is painted with inscriptions and poems written by visitors to Sigiriya. The oldest inscriptions date to the 8th century. These inscriptions confirm that Sigiriya has been a tourist destination for over a thousand years. Nowadays painting & writting on the walls is completely prohibited.

This magnificent architectural monument on the buildings and gardens of Sigiriya showcases the unique and creative technical skills and techniques used in ancient Sri Lanka. Building such a monument on a huge rock about 200 meters above the landscape requires advanced architectural and engineering skills.

Sigiriya fortress is one of the oldest gardens in the world. Sigiriya also has water parks, cave and rock gardens as well as terrace gardens.

They are located on the western side of the rock and are in a complex hydraulic system consisting of canals, dams, tanks, bridges, springs as well as pumps for surface and ground water supply.

During the rainy season all the canals starting from Sigiriya area are filled with water. The Water Fountains of the Sigiriya Gardens are still active today in rainy season. The Sigiriya Fountains, built in the 5th century, are probably the oldest springs in the world. This palace and fort complex can be pointed out as one of the best examples of ancient urban planning. Sigiriya was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982 in recognition of its uniqueness. Sigiriya is a unique combination of urban planning, water management, landscaping and art.
